Types of Pallet Racking Systems

Storage systems like pallet racking are vital for warehouses and distribution centres. They allow efficient retrieval and organization of products. Pallet racking comes in a variety of types, all designed for specific space and storage requirements. There are several common pallet racking systems:

  1. Selective pallet racking

    • Description: The most popular type of pallet rack system. This system allows for direct pallet access, which is ideal for large warehouses that have a wide range of products and need quick pallet access.

    • Features: Adjustable beams, frames and shelves, for low- and highrise storage. FIFO inventory management (First in, first out).

  2. Drive In and Drive Through Racking

    • The systems can be used to store homogeneous goods in high density. Drive-in racks are designed to allow forklifts access directly through the system.

    • Features: Ideal for LIFO inventory management (Last in, first out), maximizes storage space through reducing aisles.

  3. Push back Racking

    • Description: Push-back racking uses inclined rails with nested carts. This allows pallets to store several depths while still allowing access to every pallet. The existing pallets are pushed back when a new one is loaded.

    • Features: FIFO/LIFO management is possible with this system. It provides high density storage and fewer aisles than selective racking.

  4. Pallet Flow racking

    • Description: Pallet flow racks use gravity rollers to move pallets up and down inclined tracks. Pallets can be loaded at one end of the racking and then retrieved by another end. This creates a flow that is dynamic.

    • Features: Ideal storage for perishable products or items with high turnover, FIFO management of inventory, reduced travel time by forklifts.

  5. Cantilever rack

    • Description: Cantilever racks are designed to store long or bulky items, such as furniture, lumber or pipes. The arms are horizontal and extend from the vertical columns to allow for easy loading and unloading.

    • Features: Arms can be adjusted to fit different loads, and are suitable both for indoor and outdoor use. They're also ideal for storing products of varying lengths.

  6. Double-Deep Racking:

    • Description: Pallets can be stored in double-deep racks two rows deep. One row is placed behind the next. The front pallets can still be accessed by forklift. This allows storage to increase.

    • Features: This system requires forklifts that have an extended reach and are suitable for large warehouses.

There are many pallet rack systems on the market. Each one has its own unique benefits, depending on your specific needs for storage, the space available, and the inventory management system requirements.
